Woman gets 15 years for stealing $1.4 million — from Sheriff’s Office

Cathy Lister, 58, a former accounting associate in the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, was convicted of stealing $1.4 million over a decade that she should have deposited into an evidence trust fund account. She was sentenced Tuesday to 15 years in prison, according to the Pensacola News Journal . Some of the money that she was entrusted with was cash seized during drug arrests. Lister, who worked for the Sheriff’s office for 32 years, was arrested Feb. 4, six days

after she retired, reports the News Journal. After Lister retired, another employee assumed her duties. That employee was unable to find a deposit for $19,294 that the Sheriff’s Office seized. That’s when the investigation began that exposed Lister’s creative accounting handiwork. Investigators also found records in a shredding bin.
