Where would all the truckers go?

Pasco School Board officials are waving caution flags over the Florida Department of Transportation's plans to widen US 41 right outside the district headquarters. The plan, it seems, would place a concrete median in the road at the location where delivery trucks come daily to the district warehouse. Trucks wouldn't be able to access the district if coming north on US 41. Cars and smaller vehicles headed north would have to pass the district HQ by almost a mile and then make a U-turn to come back to enter the parking lot for the School Board chamber, employee relations and several other offices. District officials are gathering data to make a case for change with the DOT. "We're hoping

common sense will prevail," said Rick Kurtz, who manages the warehouse in addition to overseeing food and nutrition services. Kris Carson, a DOT spokeswoman, said the state has to make sure it doesn't have too many turns too close together. There's already an intersection with traffic lights at Gator Lane, which leads to some administration buildings and Land O'Lakes High. But Carson noted that construction has barely begun on the widening project, so "if there are going to be any changes, now is definitely the time to do it." She said the DOT planned to meet with district officials to see if some type of agreement is possible.
