Update on Discovery Launch

The rain stayed away, a chunk of ice melted down, and space shuttle Discovery has finally blasted off. It’s carrying a crew of seven and an unusual payload: something that looks like a huge Tinkertoy. The structure needs to be attached to the international space station before European and Japanese laboratories

can installed.

Despite modifications to Discovery’s fuel tank to prevent ice buildup, there was concern today’s launch would be delayed after ice formed on a pipe that carries hydrogen into the shuttle. Launch managers eventually determined the ice wasn’t big enough to cause a problem.
