Tourists cross Mexico off list of stops

For Michelle Stewart it was supposed to be a weekend of firsts; her first cruise, her first trip to Mexico and her first trip with her new boyfriend. “I’m happy. As long as I’m with him so it’s okay,” explained Stewart. But this time around she’ll have to do without the trip to Mexico. Carnival Cruise Lines has canceled all stops in Mexico through May 4th citing concerns over Swine Flu. Stewart was already worried about making the stop. “I was hoping they would cancel it because I didn’t want to go there basically. Then when they changed it, I was okay with it,” added Stewart. Across Florida there have been no confirmed cases of Swine Flu. Though four state health labs have received about 70 samples of possible flu cases, only three samples have been sent on to The Centers for Disease Control for final testing. “Everyone currently that has been a suspect case, or has come down with influenza-like symptoms, has been treated and treated successfully. We have no one in any hospital,” said to Dr. Ana Viamonte Ros, Surgeon General of Florida. Already though, in at least one dozen other states, more than 100

people have been sickened by the Swine Flu. In Florida, officials say they’re ready if, or when, somebody becomes sick. “We just want to make sure that people understand that the surgeon general is on top of this and briefing me every morning on it,” said Governor Charlie Crist. Though we’ve yet to see a sickness, people in Florida are beginning to feel the effects in the form of precautions. “It was going to be a first trip so they were disappointed,” said Brad Fincher, a cruise passenger. Fincher and his family got off of their Carnival Cruise Thursday without stopping in Mexico. While they were disappointed about being rerouted, they were able to see the upside of things. “I mean we’re from Washington State and it’s been raining all winter so we were just happy to get into the sunshine,” added Fincher. Carnival says there are no reported cases of Swine Flu on any of its cruise ships. The rerouting is simply precautionary. In most cases passengers have the option of rescheduling their trips if they are unhappy with the changes.
