Ted Ginn Jr. named AFC Special Teams POM; Grove still out

The Dolphins’ game against the Jets at the Meadowlands seems like a long time ago – and it has been over a month, back on Nov. 1. But Ted Ginn Jr.’s two kickoff returns for touchdowns in that game earned him AFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors for November, it was announced Thursday. Ginn became the first player in NFL history that day to record two touchdowns of 100 yards or more in the same game. He was also the eighth player with two kickoff returns in a game, and the first to return two kicks for scores in the same quarter since Green Bay’s Travis Williams did it against Cleveland on Nov. 12, 1967. The Dolphins, who also got a fumble return for a touchdown from Jason Taylor, won the game 30-25. Ginn’s total of 299 return yards in the game is second only to the 304 yards

amassed by New Orleans’ Tyrone Hughes, who had 304 against the Los Angeles Raiders on Oct. 23, 1994. Ginn hasn’t been as good since that day, though he did total 646 yards on 21 returns for the month, a 31.7-yard average. Against Buffalo last Sunday he averaged only 18.8 yards on four returns and failed to reach the 20-yard line on two of them. In other news, center Jake Grove remained on the sidelines during the early part of the Dolphins’ practice on Thursday and seems almost certain to miss Sunday’s game against New England. Grove did some light running and stretching. The offensive line did not work as a unit during the time the media was allowed to watch the workout, so Justin Smiley’s status remains unclear, though he did once again participate.
