St. Petersburg College campus closes after threat

St. Petersburg College received a nonspecific threat to its Gibbs campus that AM, prompting school officials to immediately evacuate the campus and shut the campus for the day.

An unidentified student, upset by a final grade he received in a science course, made several threats that he would do harm to the campus, but he did not elaborate, school officials said.

“He said that he was unhappy and that he might come to the campus and do damage,” said Amelia Carey, college

spokeswoman. “Someone else called a tip line and said that the student had made potential harmful threats to campus.”

The tip came in at about 11:40 a.m. The Gibbs campus was immediately cleared, police were contacted and defense guards at other campuses were put on wide-awake, Carey said today.

One fallout: The organ series concert scheduled for tonight at the St. Petersburg College Music Center has been canceled.
