Sheriff’s bookkeeper steals $130,000

There is dumb — and then there is Panhandle dumb. And here’s more proof. Cathy Lister, 58, was a bookkeeper for the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office for 32 years. She retired last week after building a nice nest egg. But this week she was arrested when authorities figured out where she got her nest egg. Lister admitted to stealing more than $130,000 from the Sheriff’s finance office during the past two years. Lister’s job was to make sure certain money that came into the Sheriff’s Office,

such as cash seized during drug investigations, was deposited into the evidence trust fund account, reports the Pensacola News Journal . Lister kept two sets of books. It didn’t work for Madoff — and it certainly didn’t work for her. And talk about leaving a paper trail — her replacement found several receipt books in an office shredder. Minor details always gets ‘em. Photo: Cathy Lister / Pensacola News Journal More FloriDUH
