Sheriff: ‘I am personally embarrassed’
Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee, in Jacksonville at a Florida Sheriff’s organization assembly, released that statement today:
As Sheriff of Hillsborough County, I want to guarantee Mr. Brian Sterner, as well as the citizens of Hillsborough County , that that incident will be investigated to the fullest. I am personally embarrassed and shocked by the horrific treatment Mr. Sterner received. I can not and will not even try to offer an explanation for what is seen on the video, other than to say, that once it was brought to my attention, I immediately initiated an internal review. The deputy responsible for dumping Mr. Sterner out of his wheelchair has been suspended without pay and the three supervisors that were on duty during that moment are plus placed on suspension.
The incident involving Mr. Sterner was not caused by a lack of training or procedure. It represents aberrant
I offer my personal apology to Mr. Sterner for the treatment that he received while being processed through Central B ooking. I want to guarantee him, and the public at large, that that incident is not indicative of the behavior of the by 3,500 men and women of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office who perform their duties with pride and professionalism on a daily basis.
