Senate gives OK to congressional maps

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Senate passed its version of a new congressional map late Tuesday afternoon by a 34-6 vote. Senate President Mike Haridopolos called it one of the Senate’s “finest hours” and hailed it as a bipartisan product given that seven Democrats voted for it. “This was dramatically different than 10 years ago,” he said. The courts will likely have the final word on whether the maps pass constitutional muster, but Haridopolos said that he hoped the bipartisan vote was an encouraging sign. Sen. Don Gaetz , R-Niceville, who shepherded the Senate’s redistricting process,

said he was hopeful that the courts could certify the maps by the end of the month and the Senate could have a final vote. He also said he thinks it is unlikely that if the court found something legally wrong with the maps that they would make them start from scratch. “It would be more likely that if the courts found something wrong with plans that are two thirds complete that they would indicate specifically where they have a problem,” Gaetz added.
