Ronnie Brown out of Carolina game; Joey Porter to return

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano ruled Ronnie Brown out of Thursday night’s game at Carolina on Tuesday but gave no indication whether he’ll return later this season. Asked about Brown’s status in the first question of his press conference at the Dolphins’ training facility, Sparano replied, “I’ll tell you Ronnie will not play in this game. As far as his status goes, he will see a specialist and we’ll update that later. But he will not play in this game.” Asked if the injury was to Brown’s ankle or foot, Sparano replied, “More to the foot.” Brown was using crutches and a cane on Sunday and Monday after being injured late in the third period of Sunday’s 25-23 victory over Tampa Bay, so it was no surprise he won’t return this week.

The Dolphins are still being secretive about his status for the rest of the year, but the fact they haven’t gone out and signed another back is one indication they feel he will return. Ricky Williams is expected to become the feature back in the Carolina game, and fullback Lousaka Polite figures to get more work. Lex Hilliard, the only other back on the roster, also should get some playing time. Sparano also said linebacker Joey Porter will play in Thursday’s game. ESPN’s Chris Mortenson had reported during Monday night’s Baltimore-Cleveland game that Porter had been suspended indefinitely. Porter was held out of last week’s game; the official reason given was “coach’s decision.”
