Predictors expect Deutch to win in Republican year

National political forecasters expect Republicans to gain seats in Congress this year, but not from districts in South Florida. The Cook and Rothenberg political reports predict that Robert Wexler’s former House seat in Broward and Palm Beach counties will remain in Democratic hands. Ted Deutch won the Democratic primary on Tuesday. Ted Deutch Ed Lynch Deutch will run against Ed Lynch — who won the Republican primary by a whisker over Joe Budd — in a special election on April 13. Democratic voters outnumber Republicans in the district by two to one. Wexler, in the midst of his 7th term, left Congress this year to lead the Center for Middle East Peace. Cook lists Democrat Ron

Klein as a likely winner in his swing district, which also straddles Broward and Palm Beach counties. Nationwide, the Cook Report points to 49 highly competitive House races for seats now held by Democrats. Only 10 seats held by Republicans are considered highly competitive. Cook also thinks Florida’s Senate seat held by appointee George LeMieux will likely remain in Republican hands. Republicans Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio are running for that seat, along with Democrats Kendrick Meek and Maurice Ferre. Republicans are expected to gain at least two Senate seats this year with victories in Delaware and North Dakota.
