Police: Tell us about holiday gunfire

At first glance, South Preston Avenue looks like a nice quiet place to live. But residents along that street say it’s very different when you listen. “Gunshots go off all the time. You hear gunshots everywhere,” complained resident Quina Addison. In fact, she says, she often hears gunfire during the daytime. It may be more unsettling these days because three months ago, an 8-year-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting on South Preston. It was April 5 when Paris Whitehead Hamilton was caught in gunfire aimed to her home , even though she was not the target of the alleged shooters. Now, St. Petersburg police hope people will listen and report guns being fired into the air during the July 4 holiday. In fact, those who do call in tips about people firing into the air can qualify for a reward. The money is being offered this weekend as part of the city’s gun bounty

program . That program offers money to people who report tips about illegal guns. Last July 4 holiday, St. Pete police reported 14 incidents where homes or cars were damaged by bullets being fired randomly.  It’s also a problem at New Year’s . Despite the potential danger, police may have a challenge finding people who fire their guns into the air in celebration. “A lot of times, too much talk can get you in trouble,” H.L. Garnett said from his home not far from that drive-by shooting. He’s not the only one who is reluctant to call in tips, even in exchange for a reward. “I don’t think anybody is going to necessarily turn somebody in to get this money,” Addison added. Even so, police insist all calls will be confidential. Those who do wish to make reports can call 800-873-8477.
