Pasco schools officials seek fair share of career education fund

"We're not getting enough," Pasco County School Board member Kathryn Starkey said of state funds for career and technical education. She pointed to a recently released OPPAGA report that detailed how some school districts got more than three times the amount that state formulas indicated they should receive, while others got less than half. "As school districts move toward career academies, which are expensive, we need to make sure we are fairly disbursing the funds to make the academies as best equipped as possible," Starkey told the Gradebook. She planned to bring the issue to the School Board this morning to talk about how hard it wants to push

for change before she heads to Tallahassee with fellow board member Joanne Hurley. "We need to have our ducks in a row," she said. If the state model were followed, the Tampa Bay area school districts would see their funding change as follows: Hernando , +$3,307 Hillsborough , +$13,269 Pasco , +594.906 Pinellas , -$2,148,881 Manatee , +$3,185,458 Sarasota , -$2,520,976 Starkey said she had been in contact with state Rep. Will Weatherford,  a Pasco County Republican who's chairman of the House Education Policy Council, to pursue changes in the funding stream.
