Pasco prepares for Race to the Top

Thinking that Florida has has a strong chance to claim nearly a quarter of the Obama administration's Race to the Top grant, Pasco County school officials are kicking off their preparations to use their $4 million to $8 million portion (if the state wins the grant, that is). The administration has assigned each section of the state's plan to district departments to consider several  questions, including: How does this requirement align with the district’s Strategic Plan? Is the district already required to implement this requirement (or elements of this requirement) under existing state or federal regulations? To what extent is the district already in compliance with this requirement? What additional resources will be required to fully implement this requirement? Who

are the key stakeholders who are needed in order to ensure collaborative implementation of this requirement? What barriers exist to full implementation of this requirement? The next step will be to put together teams of those "key stakeholders" to create an action plan that matches district priorities and Race to the Top philosophy. No doubt, teachers fall under the definition of stakeholder. The United School Employees of Pasco has refused negotiate over RTTT, but its leaders have made clear they want to work together to find acceptable ways to implement the goals. (Just not bargaining.) Can't wait to see where this is headed. *
