Officials: Kids left in hot car while mom visits boyfriend in jail

Psalmai Thompson, 20, was arrested on a count of child neglect after she allegedly left her three children in a hot car while visiting her boyfriend at the Orange County Jail, reports the Orlando Sentinel . The children were discovered Sunday morning after a man told an Orange County Corrections employee there were three children in a parked car who were sweating and appeared to be “very hot,” a Sheriff’s Office arrest report said. The employee went to the car, which was unlocked, and removed the children. When deputies arrived, a baby appeared “groggy and sweaty,” the report said. The children were being evaluated by paramedics when Thompson ran out of the visitation center and to the car. A deputy noted in the arrest report that Thompson asked, “Where’d she go? Where is she?” Thompson told the deputy a friend was supposed to be watching the children. Thompson said her friend, whom she identified as Cathlean Smith, met her at the jail. Thompson gave the deputies two telephone numbers for Smith, but neither number was correct, the report said. A deputy asked the oldest of the children

if her mom had met any friends and the child said no, the report said. The child also said no one got in the car with them when they got to the jail. Two rear windows of the car were cracked, the arrest report said. The fire department used a device to measure the temperature inside the car. The lowest reading was 105 degrees, while the highest was 125 degrees, the report said. After Monday’s hearing, Thompson told reporters she left her her 2-month-old, 3-year-old and 5-year-old children in the car with “somebody I thought was my friend,” before leaving for 20 minutes. Thompson said she is happy the children are able to stay with their great-grandmother. She is allowed to have supervised visitation, the judge ruled. The family has an extensive history with DCF, an agency spokeswoman said. That includes allegations of abuse, some of which have been verified, DCF spokeswoman Carrie Hoeppner said.
