Obama to cheer for Saints from White House

President Obama will make an appearance on the Super Bowl broadcast from South Florida, but only through the magic of TV. The president plans to hunker down in the wintry White House to watch the game along with members of Congress from Indiana and Louisiana. He made sure to invite some Colts fans to balance his support for the Saints. But sports fans everywhere will have a chance to see him through a television interview with CBS anchor Katie Couric at 4:30 p.m. Sunday during the Super Bowl pre-game show. Obama favored the Pittsburgh Steelers in last year’s Super Bowl, perhaps payback for an endorsement from team owner Dan Rooney in the 2008 campaign. This year, Obama prefers the

Saints because of all the travails in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. He told ABC’s Diane Sawyer: “You know, I think both teams are terrific. I guess I am rooting a little bit for the Saints as the underdog, partly just because when I think about what’s happened in New Orleans over the last several years and how much that team means to them. You know, I’m pretty sympathetic.” Obama loves to attend sporting events. He delighted fans in Washington last weekend by showing up unexpectedly at a Georgetown versus Duke college basketball game. But he’ll watch the Super Bowl from home.
