Obama cracks down on employers who hire illegals

The Obama administration is paving the way for immigration reform by cracking down on employers who recruit and hire workers who come to this country illegally. Obama, much like his predecessor George W. Bush, wants to establish his enforcement credentials before pushing legislation that would allow millions of the undocumented to become legal residents. While Bush’s people focused on border control and worksite raids to round up illegal workers, the new administration is investigating hundreds of employers suspected of exploiting a cheap and compliant workforce. The idea is to show the voting public that Obama is serious about enforcing the law, not just forgiving those who broke the law by coming here. Critics fear that granting what they call “amnesty’’ would encourage more illegal migrations. Republican reformers generally are focused on

helping farmers and businesses meet their labor needs. Democrats stress worker rights and ways to bring the undocumented out of the shadows of the law. At a White House meeting on immigration last week, Arizona Senator John McCain and other Republicans said any reform package must include an expanded foreign guest-worker program. Some Democrats and labor unions are cool to that idea because they fear it would depress wages and take jobs away from Americans. A logical compromise would be to give each side what it wants: a guest-worker program and a path to citizenship for those already here. Such a deal still would draw fervent opposition from those who want to restrict immigration.
