Last call, but no one’s leaving

“Last Call” is a bar like you’ve never seen before — it may look familiar, and the people all seem like they belong there, but upon closer inspection, they’re not moving. They’re 13 life-like statues lined up around a mahogany bar, on display at a gallery in downtown Sarasota. It’s been called a ‘cultural tribute to the vibrancy of American nightlife’ by part-time Sarasota resident Jack Dowd. “Jack owned bars and he

wanted to create the perfect bar, and he did with ‘Last Call,’” says Brenda Terris, director of the annual ‘Season of Sculpture’ exhibit. Dowd also included pastel paintings with a biography of the person each statue is based on. The exhibit remains on display through the end of September.
