Lantana man facing charges in 2006 explosion near Boynton Beach

“These homemade devices are very unstable, are shock-sensitive and are very, very dangerous. They were putting the whole neighborhood in jeopardy.”

More than a year after an explosion rocked a neighborhood west of Boynton Beach and killed an alleged co-conspirator, a Lantana man surrendered Monday to a federal charge of conspiracy to manufacture homemade explosives.

Wearing jeans and a blue shirt, his hands cuffed in front of him, Jim Evans, 46, entered a not-guilty plea and was released on a $100,000 personal surety bond. He faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if found guilty.

Charles F. Reynolds, 44, was killed in the April 2006 blast on Hypoluxo Farms Road

while manufacturing the homemade explosives inside a motor home. The explosion destroyed the motor home, a truck, car, boat and a storage building and rattled neighbors whose homes shook, even miles away. Shortly after, Reynolds’ wife told WPTV-Ch. 5 that he built his own fireworks and set them off during holiday celebrations for family and friends. Read more
