Lamborghini owner can’t keep it clean

Paul Vitale says he just had to violate water restrictions and wash his cars. “I’m trying to protect is the paint and wax — the dirt and stuff is actually causing damage,” he said. Vitale has a 6-year old Lamborghini and a 2-year old BMW M-6 and estimates his rolling stock is worth about $450,000. He will not entrust either car to commercial car washes or mobile auto detailers, and says the high pressure water hoses at self-serve car washes could also damage their finishes and exterior electronic sensors. “I do everything myself by hand. I use filters to wash the car, I have special soaps, special towels,” he said. And he has a special problem, since private car washing is prohibited by water restrictions. Vitale claims he tried for seven weeks to get a variance from the Southwest Florida Water Management District. When his request was verbally denied, he washed his cars. “Basically it came down to they left me no choice and

I did it anyway,” he said. A spokesperson for the Southwest Florida Water Management District says Vitale did not prove an “undue hardship”, nor offer an alternative water conservation plan. She says he also rejected Swiftmud suggestions that included driving to a county without water restrictions or pouring bottled water on his cars. Vitale says he is a low-volume water user. He lives by himself in a condominium, so he has no lawn to irrigate nor co-habitants doing laundry and taking showers. He also thinks he only uses a few gallons washing a car. “I only wanted to wash the car twice a month, it wasn’t like I wanted to do it everyday,” he said. The water management district will decide later this month whether to extend current restrictions past June 30th. Swiftmud says it has granted about 40 variances from water restrictions, almost all of them for irrigation.
