Janssen: ‘I just feel so badly for the family’

Responding to accusations that she was blaming the parents for Friday’s bus stop tragedy, Pinellas Superintendent Julie Janssen says she was only trying to explain district bus policy. “How do you blame anyone? This is a tragedy. No, I would never blame the parents,” she told the Gradebook. “What I was trying to do was stay within quoting our policy, and not respond in a personal way or judgmental way.” “Anybody who knows me knows how I feel about kids,” Janssen continued. “This is a loss. This is like one of my own kids.”

Janssen said she would like to meet with the family, if the family wants to meet with her. She said deputy superintendent Jim Madden is trying to set that up. “You think and wonder what you can do to help ease the pain of the family,” she said. “People don’t know that we all are feeling very painful about the whole thing, and it’s horrible. “I just feel so badly for the family. It’s just a terrible accident.” *
