House committee moves to ban Internet cafes

TALLAHASSEE — A House committee, by a 10-5 vote, moved to ban Internet cafes across the state, as both the House and Senate debate whether to completely rid the state of the sweepstakes cafes or to regulate them. Rep. Scott Plakon , R-Longwood, proposed banning the electronic gaming cafes last year, but the legislation did not make it through the process. The Senate is slated to take up a bill tomorrow that aims to regulate the cafes. Plakon said the Internet cafes are unlike other gambling operations in the

state and are more predatory. “You can be a pro gaming legislator and still be offended by those in our community,” he said. Several Democrats expressed concerns though that it would take away jobs. Some of the cafes are run by Veterans groups and employ veterans or give to veterans charities. “To take a job away from a veteran is something I cannot and will not do,” said Rep. Joe Abruzzo , D-Wellington. The legislation is HB 3.
