A well known Hispanic leader from Tampa was killed over the weekend in Miami. Maria Esther Carrillo, 48, and her 17 year old daughter, Maria Liliana, were hit by a car along Biscayne Boulevard. Esther was a founding member of the Hispanic Alliance of Tampa Bay. She died on the scene. Her daughter was critically injured and remains in a local hospital. They were in Miami to pick up a Hispanic scholarship award. Police say the accident is still under investigation. The Carillo family issued a statement thanking friends and family for their support during the difficult time. “Maria Esther Carrillo passed away on May 28, 2009 in Miami, Florida.

Maria Liliana Carrillo is in the intensive care unit, but in stable condition. The doctors are cautiously optimistic of a full and complete recovery. We ask for your continued prayers as she recuperates. At the family’s request, in lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Maria Esther’s heart and soul: TICH-Taller Inter-Cultural Hispano-Americano. Please make donations in name of TICH, Inc., mailed to: 16403 Lake Heather Drive, Tampa, Fl 33618. Maria Esther Carrillo’s memorial service will be held in Tampa.” The family says they will release the memorial service details once plans are finalized.
