If a teacher retires from Florida schools, he or she can't just return to the classroom after a few days. Somehow, though, school district and college leaders seem to have found ways to quit and come back in just a month, having secured their pensions and kept their salaries intact. Superintendent Mike Lannon did it in St. Lucie schools back in October. So did Lee superintendent Jim Browder and Indian River State College president Edwin Massey in 2008. The latest to the list: Chipola College president Gene Prough. The Panama City News Herald reports that Prough's short retirement,

from Feb. 28 through March 31, "makes Prough eligible for a lump-sum payment of $432,332 — the money that has accrued in his state retirement account — and monthly pension benefits of $6,595 for the rest of his life. Upon his return to Chipola, Prough will earn a $148,339 annual salary." The paper calls it "double dipping." Some more charitable folks say it's just gaining access your own money and, besides, someone has to be president. What do you say?
