Groundbreaking to mark Tamiami Trail bridge

Construction of a long-awaited bridge along Tamiami Trail begins on Friday with a groundbreaking ceremony. It has taken 20 years of planning, haggling, lawsuits and lobbying for federal funding to get to this point. The bridge is considered a crucial part of a preliminary Everglades restoration project dubbed Modified Waters. It will allow a more natural flow of water in wide sheets to replenish Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and representatives of the National Parks Conservation Association and Army Corps of Engineers are expected to attend the groundbreaking. “We applaud the efforts of the federal government for starting the process of bridging

Tamiami Trail,” said Sara Fain of the conservation association. “However, this is only the beginning and we can’t stop here. Ten miles of road continues to block water from reaching the park, which is the lifeblood of the Everglades.” The group believes the only way to meaningfully restore the park and its wildlife is a series of bridges along 11 miles of Tamiami Trail that cuts through Northeast Shark River Slough. The groundbreaking is set for 1:30 Friday afternoon on Tamiami Trail, about one mile west of SW 177th Avenue.
