Former President Bill Clinton stumps for Senator Ted Deutch

Jack Shifrel of Coconut Creek, an area leader of the Broward Democratic Party, attended the Ted Deutch fundraiser featuring former President Bill Clinton. Clinton devoted most of his remarks to health care, Shifrel said, and also touched on the decline of American politics in which partisanship is so strong Democrats and Republicans often don’t work together. Clinton, who is the U.N. special envoy on Haiti, discussed the situation in the earthquake-ravaged nation. The former president had just returned from a visit to Haiti. “He went into a great deal about the situation in Haiti and about how important it is to do what has to be done,” Shifrel said. Palm Beach County Democratic Chairman Mark Siegel said more than 300 people packed themselves into the St. Andrews Country Club in suburban Boca Raton where Clinton spoke for about 20 minutes. “I just remember how really brilliant and well informed and down to earth and in touch with reality Bill Clinton is,” he said. Siegel said Deutch has that same charisma: “They see in him many of those wonderful human qualities

that exist in Bill Clinton,” he said. “It’s about people. And individual people, not the faceless mass.” Deutch was a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign and was a Hillary Clinton delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Bill Clinton was familiar with Deutch and his background, Shifrel said. He said Clinton emphasized several of Deutch’s issues including the legislation he spearheaded that ended investments of Florida pension funds in entities that do business in Iran. Clinton identified Deutch as the first in the country to pursue that legislation and said his wife, the secretary of state, is working on the same issue on the international level. Besides Shifrel, people from Broward at the event included county Democratic Chairman Mitch Ceasar; Broward’s state Democratic committeeman, Mike Moskowitz; Broward’s state Democratic committeewoman, Diane Glasser; and Coconut Creek Mayor Marilyn Gerber. Palm Beach County officials at the event, Shifrel said, included Tax Collector Anne Gannon and County Commissioner Burt Aaronson. — Anthony Man
