Fishermen find live missile in Gulf

By at 8 June, 2009, 9:03 pm

Bomb squad technicians are working to dismantle an 8-foot, live air-to-air missile that a group of fisherman hooked in the Gulf of Mexico. Pinellas County deputies and members of the MacDill Air Force Base bomb squad are working on the device at Madeira Beach, where the fisherman brought it ashore. The missile is on the ground in a vacant parking lot on the south side of the Tom Stuart Causeway. According to the Pinellas Sheriff’s Office,

the bridge is outside the 500-foot perimeter, and it remains open to traffic. Investigators say the crew on board the boat were long-line fishing when they hooked the missile near Panama City around 6 p.m. They notified authorities and were met by the bomb squad as soon as they docked.
