FDOT: Save time and gas, try carpooling

Are you tired of spending too much money on gas and driving all the time? There may be a simple solution to both problems. It’s called the Commuter Services Program and it’s organized by the Florida Department of Transportation. The program matches people up so they can commute to work together. “It’s kind of nice not to have to drive all the time,” said Amy Perez. She is one of the almost four hundred people who have signed up to participate. Amy and her commuting partner drive from the Riverview area to Bartow, and back again every night. Perez is saving more than just money. She is saving time that might otherwise have been wasted behind a wheel. When it’s not her turn to drive, she frequently spends her time in the car reading for pleasure. “You don’t have much time for pleasure anymore these days, so its kind of nice,” she said.

All you do to take part in the program is go to www.commuterservicesfl.com , and answer a few simple questions. FDOT will send you potential matches, sometimes dozens of them. To help you sift through responses, FDOT periodically holds events, like luncheons, where potential matches can meet face to face before they make a commitment. It also offers an “emergency ride” if you have to go home early or stay late. If you or your employer calls a taxi, the agency will reimburse the cost of it. The DOT hopes that there is a commuter match out there for everyone. “Maybe you can find that person who has something close to you, who has that really wacky schedule,” said Cindy Clemmons-Adente, a spokesperson for FDOT’s District 1 Office in Bartow. “You never know until you look.”
