Don’t Bank on Sink?

Aaron Deslatte, Tallahassee Bureau TALLAHASSEE — Alachua County GOP Chairman Stafford Jones is going after Democrat Alex Sink with a Web site called Don’t Bank on Sink that re-uses some of the same talking points the state GOP put out yesterday, minutes after the first-term state chief financial officer announced her gubernatorial bid. In a press release the group just put out, Jones lists himself as the “spokesman” for the group, which so far appears to be little more than a Web site. The group hasn’t registered as a political committee or incorporated with the Department of State. Jones is a Gainesville-based political operative and co-founder of a political polling and phone-bank operation called War Room Logistics, who said the Don’t Bank of Sink group included some like-minded politicos concerned about Sink’s bid for governor. “We’ve just read the stories and have

some questions about her,” he said. Jones said Thursday he had no immediate plans to register the group as an electioneering organization, which would require disclosing who is funding the group — and he doesn’t have to, because of a pending federal lawsuit the state is appealing that has for the moment struck down Florida’s electioneering law as a First Amendment infringement. Sink spokeswoman Tara Klimek responded a few nano-seconds later with this: “This is the typical, old politics — brought to you by the small sliver of narrow, partisan interests who like Tallahassee just the way it is. Working with the people of Florida, Alex Sink is determined to change all that. She knows we can do something no smear campaign ever could: Get Florida’s economy working for everyday Floridians again.”
