Dolphins’ Pro Bowl alternates remain a mystery

Left tackle Jake Long might be the only player to represent the Dolphins Jan. 31 during Pro Bowl in South Florida. Injuries always open up spots for the game’s alternates. A season ago, Long, the No. 1 alternate at tackle, played in the game when Buffalo’s Jason Peters was injured. This season, there could be even more openings because players from the two Super Bowl participants will sit out because the game will be played the following Sunday. Miami fullback Lousaka Polite is the No. 2 alternate at his position, but he’s not the only Dolphins’ alternate. The team will not confirm the other ones. “We don’t make a habit of announcing alternates,” coach Tony Sparano said. “It’s not part of our philosophy.” Running back Ricky Williams and defensive end Randy Starks

are possible candidates. Williams is sixth in the AFC in rushing and has four 100-yard games since he replaced 2008 Pro Bowler Ronnie Brown, who was injured seven games ago. Starks leads Miami defensive linemen with 52 tackles and six sacks, but has not had one in five games. He also is a 3-4 end, so could be considered a tackle. Arizona’s 3-4 end Darnell Dockett, who made the 2010 team as a tackle. “If I haven’t heard anything, that’s bad news,” Starks said. Starks might need a lot of players to bow out or make the Super Bowl, judging from Sparano’s response. “It depends on how deep you’re crawling,” he said. “(Polite is) not necessarily the only one.”
