Comparing Palm Beach County election results with the rest of the state

Who won and who lost is most important, but all sorts of infomation is buried in the results of Tuesday’s primary, especially when comparing South Florida with the rest of the state. Preliminary numbers from the state Division of Elections show just 15 percent of Broward’s registered voters went to the polls, and just 16 percent turned out in Palm Beach County — substantially less than the 21 percent who turned out statewide. Activists and analysts on both sides said there was an enthusiasm gap, emanating from the races at the top of the ticket — the governor primary for the Republicans and the U.S. Senate primary for the Democrats. Florida has 15 percent more registered Democrats than Republicans. Yet 41 percent more Republicans voted in their governor primary than Democrats who voted in their Senate primary. Example: Bill McCollum beat Rick Scott

in Broward and Palm Beach counties while he was losing statewide. State Sen. Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres, trounced state Sen. Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, in Palm Beach County — which is Aronberg’s home base. Gelber, whose district includes part of South Broward, did phenomenally well in Broward County. Two Broward-Palm Beach county districts are fascinating. In the 22nd District, many more Republicans participated in their party’s primary than Democrats who participated in the Democratic primary. And state Rep. Ellyn Bogdanoff, R-Fort Lauderdale, was expected to beat state Rep. Carl Domino, R-Jupiter, in the Broward part of the two-county 25th Senate District. Not only did she overwhelm him in Broward, she bested him in his home territory of Palm Beach County. Compare the full detailed numbers.
