This is a living nightmare and everyone needs to understand the implications. Our country’s founding father are surely turning in their graves.
Just remember (and I’m not saying this because I’m feeling any particular way about this bill as it is currently written) that this country felt very similarly when the Medicare bill was being proposed. That, too, is flawed, but is continuously amended to make it work for those who need it. And we are now of the age where it’s our parents that … See Moreneed it. Even flawed, if you ask them, I’m sure they’re glad they have it. I think our FFs would be mortified to know that this issue, that’s important and necessary for so many Americans, is falling under party lines. I’d like to know where MY Congressman is — why isn’t he calling me to know how I feel about this bill so when he casts his vote, it’s truly for what his constituents want, not his political party.
Our founding fathers have been rolling in their graves for decades. After all, most of what the federal government does today lies outside of the constitutional restraints our founding fathers put in place. Don’t give me the “times were different” line and they could not have foreseen what the modern world would look like and what today’s … See Morechallenges would be, considering the size of today’s population, yada, yada, yada. Our founding fathers knew the world would change, after all, it always had before and during their lifetimes. This is why they made the Constitution amendable. If the federal government wants to become involved in something that the Constitution does not allow, such as HC, it should adhere to the constitutional requirement of amending the constitution. Then, if they can’t get it ratified, they can’t do it, end of story.
Also, as citizens, if we truly care where our representatives fall on a particular issue, and we really want our voices to be heard, we need to be calling them. After all, he/she will not be reelected simply because he/she votes along party lines, the “party” does not elect him/her, the constituents do. Look at Ron Paul: He continues to be reelected (10 terms) and is seldom in step with the Republican party. In fact, he’s often a thorn in their sides.
I have wonderful healthcare, guess I can kiss that goodbye! People from communist countries are saying this is how it started it started in their country. Can’t believe things have gone this far…
if this thing passes like this even more people will lose their jobs as smaller employers are forced to let people go to afford health care for those who remain and get ready to work harder if you are lucky enough to be still around!
Erika they are also imposing changes to medicare that will decrease benefits dramatically. Working in this industry I can’t imagine giving less in some of these areas like home health nurses. It’s beyond…..
too bad we all couldn’t have read this CUMBERSOME pile of paper earlier. I agree our Founding Fathers are turning over in their graves . . . this is NOT what this country was founded on or why MY Grandparents gave up everything to come to this country! The ONLY good thing about all of this is it has wakened us all up… See More and we have all finally become engaged in OUR government and it’s corrupted processes. We the People must stay resolved to correct the insanity in DC. Thanks again!!!!!
Angela, it looks like you’ve read more of the bill than Nancy Pelosi did.
Ridiculous, idiotic partisan politics all around. Empty cliches, too: there are no known reports of seismic activity anywhere near the tombs or graves of what people vaguely and blindly refer to as the “founding fathers” (many of whom thought it perfectly acceptable to own other human beings, and did). These arguments wouldn’t pass a logical fallacy quiz in my remedial freshman composition section.
We don’t know “what this country was founded on.” Think on it. We told George 3 to stuff it, claiming that “all men are created equal,” and in less than one hundred years had to rip the country to shreds convincing one half of it that men were, in fact, equal (many still didn’t buy it). And that didn’t even get to the “woman question,” a point conveniently overlooked by all the women whining here about what the “founding fathers” thought. So, ladies: Do you like voting? Having jobs? Having a say in anything? Being considered equal to males? If so, then YOU, technically, are making the “founding fathers roll over in their graves.” Think of that irony: the very term “founding fathers,” with its awe-inspiring gendered implications, also suggests that your thoughts are meaningless. They didn’t acknowledge you outside of the spheres of baby- and home-maker. Or was it 1776 when you earned the “right” to vote?
Everyone opposed to health care reform is acting and writing as if everything was perfect until, say, last week. Really? I mean, really?… See More
Oh, and if you can find a dictionary or (and I stress) reputable encyclopedia-type source, research the wide-ranging theories of “socialism.” Wanna close public schools, shut down the armed forces, and, for a minor example, block off the Interstate Highways? (OK, that last one was weak–I hate most of I-95 too…) And in conclusion, and on that apocalyptic front:
This country almost removed Clinton from office over a blowjob, and Nixon resigned for a burglary cover-up worthy of the Marx Brothers. Do you really think if we were on the brink of morphing into communist USSR c. 1977 it wouldn’t be stopped? I mean, it’s not like we made torture legal or anything……
Wow, Kevin, you certainly sound angry. While reading many of your statement they make sense, however, once the “comprehension” kicks in, they lose their validity. I think it only takes the time to read the Bill of Rights and the Constitution to find out what this country is founded on. And then if interested, reading the biography of some of our “founding fathers” could give even more insight (I suggest starting with George Washington).
I believe that the frustration over this Health Care Bill is that so much of “the process” was held behind closed doors and done with “deals” that did not pertain to everyone. I also believe that most of the people who voted for our President did so because he promised “change”, “hope” and “transparency”; not the same old Washington nonsense. And what have we just witnessed? More of the same! Disappointing at least.
Almost all of us believe that there is room for improvement in our Health Care System. And I’m sure we would all agree it is important and MUST be addressed. One would hope and believe that a matter of this importance would be openly discussed and not muddled with other issues. … See More
If you have, thanks for reading my thoughts.
Hi Laura: I DID read your thoughts in full; thank you for them. I have also read the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution, and many biographies. Collectively, though, they don’t simply catalogue an easily-codified list of what the country is “founded upon.” Principles and morals and mores are difficult to peg that way. We can INFER quite a bit, to … See Morebe sure, and many issues are clearer than others, but one “only has to take the time,” to borrow your phrasing, to notice that the eloquence of what might be identified as a “founding principle” in the notion that “all men are created equal” really meant “all white men and no women, and no other peoples (who might not really even be people like we’re people)” to the fathers. This doesn’t cancel out ALL the rest, but it must be considered. I think, in their brilliance, they suggested to future generations (us) that we couldn’t possibly know everything they thought as framers, or that they themselves couldn’t anticipate the monumental changes that growing nations can go through, by making our most important document ammendable. In that respect, I don’t CARE what the founders thought of health care. Barbers were bleeding people and using leeches.
I am angry, but it’s fueled as much by faulty arguments than the politics fueling the arguments. I sometimes get to teach Classical Argument, and I often use contemporary press clippings rather than Cicero to show how politicians and their constituents constantly lie, twist issues, and generally get it all wrong–on both sides of the aisle.
Are we not to wonder at the fact that EVERY member of one party voted against the bill? You rightly refer to “muddled” issues; like re-elections? Like reading a dense, if perfectly “transparent” document and wrongly, deliberately, and maliciously scare a huge chunk of the country’s population about “death panels” that didn’t, don’t, and won’t exist?
Health care is a basic human need and right…there should be no price tag attached to that. Unfortunately, it seems to be acceptable to allow insurance companies and big pharma to profit from this need because in turn, profits roll into other pockets (politicians, lobbyists, etc.) It is a giant industry out of control, sadly. And because some … See More people can be gullible and are easily bullied, the media picks out the biggest scare tactics from our leaders they can find, feeding anger and panic to the general public. Here in Canada, everyone I know is scratching their heads wondering why government health care is such a bad thing in the American mindset. SCARY Socialist medicine…ooooohhhh!!! When I tell them of the co-pays and deductibles I had to pay, not to mention the premiums out of each paycheck, then they really don’t get it. And you know what? Neither do I. STOP feeling bullied or pressured by the media and the Heads…READ about the issues…EDUCATE yourself!
I hope everybody realizes that this long list of “problems” with the health care bill is essentially a long list of lies.
PolitiFact examined this thing line by line and explain why this chain e-mail is basically crap:
There are two things that the U. S. taxpayers primarily pay for. The first is Medicare. Insurance companies do not want to pay for your parents or your grandparents to have health insurance. If you think repulbicans want to pay for it you should read John McCain’s position on it in the 2008 election (the last written proposal). They think that their tax dollars have your grandmother, worth a million dollars, on the dole. They are tired of paying for her, and anyone in your family like her. So, if you are tired of paying taxes, vote for them. Just get ready to pay for your own insurance and don’t forget that they may not even qualify. Then you and they pay for everything. Oh, and the line above about the ‘government being able to look in your checkbooks,”–well if you have your monthly bills deducted from your checking account, you’ve given a lot of people access. The government can just call the utility company. You do know that the government has the right to see your tax return right? If you’re going to try to scare people, at least don’t use something downright silly.
