A bay area teen who is fighting cancer was granted his one and only wish today, a swimming pool. Looking at Nate Pietrangelo you’d never imagine this 15-year-old is fighting for his life. Even at such a young age, Nate has been in and out of hospitals. As a baby, he was diagnosed with elliptocytosis. An abnormality of red blood cells forcing him to undergo dozens of transfusions. Then at 7, he was diagnosed with Osteoporosis. An abnormal hardening of the bones. Now this summer, doctors discovered a cancerous tumor in his kidney. “It’s been pretty hard. I’ve had like pretty bad days. Some days are better than others,” says Nate. “I think a couple of times he told me I want it to stop. I want to die. I was like don’t say that you’re going to be better. In the midst of that I think he really felt like that,” said Kari Pietrangelo, Nate’s mother. Nate has gone through 10 weeks of chemotherapy. His family says the second day of treatment was the worst. “It’s hard in the beginning to say it’s going to be

o.k. And, you’ll do it, it’s going to be o.k. So that day was little bit hard,” said Kari. But things are turning around for Nate. His dream of having a pool in his backyard was granted by The Children’s Dream Fund. “I love it. It’s awesome. It’s perfect for our yard,” said Nate. “We really didn’t think he was getting a pool. I was like, o.k. what do you want second because you’re not getting a pool,” said Kari. Kari believes the swimming pool has lifted Nate’s spirits and brought back a smile that was missing for months. “If he can do this then he can do anything. I always thought he was amazing but this just proves it. How incredibly strong he is,” said Kari. “It’s made me a lot stronger. But at the beginning of this summer it was really hard. And now I have the pool so it should be easier I think,” said Nate. Nate has 18 weeks of chemotherapy left. Doctors say the treatment has an 85% cure rate.
