‘An education law that is worthy of a great nation’

From U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's big speech today, in which he said No Child Left Behind had big flaws and should be revamped into a "transformative education law that guarantees every child the education they want and need" … We're still waiting to get a critical mass of great teachers and principals into underperforming schools located in underserved communities, where our failure to educate has in fact perpetuated cycles of poverty and social failure.

We're still waiting for a testing and accountability system that accurately and fairly measures student growth and uses data to drive instruction and teacher evaluation. We're still waiting for America to replace an agrarian 19th century school calendar with an information age calendar that increases learning time on a par with other countries. We're still waiting and we cannot wait any longer.
