African Americans, Amendment 2 and Obama

Democratic consultant Pamela Burch Fort talked about her concern about Amendment 2 on Tuesday and what affect it could have on other political races — particularly among African Americans, who tend to support efforts that target same-sex marriage.

Buzz wondered whether the Amendment 2 poses a quandary for evangelicals and Christian groups. Should such groups reach out to African Americans on Amendment 2, when such a campaign could additionally push bigger turnout among a constituency that has heavily supported Sen. Barack Obama, who is now the presumed Democratic nominee?

Dennis Baxley, head of the Florida Christian

Coalition, said the poll initiative is his group’s major precedence, and they’re not going to distress about how Amendment 2 impacts other races, even the presidential race. In fact, they’ve already started reaching out to African American churches.

“This issue is one that crosses race, party, culture, it’s a corner-stone issue and I think it rises above in people’s minds,” Baxley said. “Our opponents will largely invent that a debate about benefits, considering they don’t want to have the discussion about homosexual marriage, considering that’s what that is about.”
