Accidental smiles make contest cut

Both of Vanessa Boback’s dogs got lucky when she found them: one she adopted from the Humane Society, the other she found running the streets as a 12-week-old puppy. But now she’s hoping they’ll get even luckier because of a photo she snapped a couple of months ago. “They happened to be wrestling one day and I noticed them on their backs and wriggling all around so I got my camera, and I was able to snap it, and I was like ‘yes! I got a good one.,” she said. The photo shows 3-year-old “Buddy” and not-quite-2-year-old “Captain” on their backs, mouths wide open in a pose that looks like they’re laughing. When Vanessa stumbled upon an on line photo contest looking for “smiling” pets, she entered the photo and ended up as a finalist. Buddy and Captain are one of 29 “favorites so far” on the “I’m Tired of….Animal Cruelty” contest. The

winners will star in a video called “Smile,” featuring dogs and cats mugging for the camera, and showing off their very best smiles. The “I’m Tired of…” campaign was launched a year ago by brother/sister team Dan Hoffman and Carrie Pollare to fight against issues we’re all “tired of” including animal cruelty. Their first “Smile” video was such a hit, they decided to do a second one, and that lead to the contest, which will be judged by representatives from “Best Friends Animal Society” and the National Geographic TV show, “Dogtown.” Vanessa is excited that her beloved pets made the finals, especially since the video will call attention to a cause that’s near and dear to her heart. “That would be great. I’d tell everybody. That would be awesome.” To see the contest entries including Buddy and Captain: www.imtiredonline.com
