A case for school uniforms

For the first time, the Indian River district is mandating uniforms at the middle school level. Some parents are not too thrilled. "You have kids who are maturing and here we are drawing back on their choices," parent Mikey Marini told the Vero Beach Press-Journal . "I send my kids to school for an education," added Becky Polge. "I wonder how much instructional time (enforcement) is going to take up." Not surprisingly, the folks

in charge love uniforms. They talk about how they help with discipline, improve attitudes and even can lead to better academic performance (a dubious claim at best). But then comes this gem of a perspective: "You don't come to school for self-expression," Oslo Middle principal Deborah Long told the Press-Journal . " Let the students stand out with academics , not what they're wearing." Convinced?
