29 John Hopkins staffers send letter to Janssen, school board

Staffers at John Hopkins Middle School asked the school board and Superintendent Julie Janssen for help for months to deal with a growing group of chronically disruptive students, according to a letter signed by 29 members of the "John Hopkins Middle Family" and delivered to Janssen and the board today. The staffers says two things led to the current crisis: 1) the closing of Riviera Middle School, which forced rival gangs together at Hopkins, and 2) three and a half years of inept administration. They call for nine changes, including support for principal Claud Effiom's efforts to remove problem students; re-zoning

to separate rival gangs; straightening out discipline data, which they suggest has been rigged; and establishment of an "isolation" class where students would learn behavior modification until they earn their back into the general population. The staffers also ask that Janssen and board members serve as substitute teachers at Hopkins for a day: "We truly want you to experience the reality of our professional lives. We believe this will help you to understand how to better resolve our issues."
